On 25 November 1960, the Mirabal sisters had been brutally assassinated due to their identification as ladies and activists. Their solely crime was having fought for his or her rights towards the Dominican dictator, Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961). In 1993, the United Nations Common Meeting adopted Resolution 48/104 for the Elimination of Violence In opposition to Girls which defines this kind of violence as “any act of gender-based violence that leads to, or is more likely to lead to, bodily, sexual, or psychological hurt or struggling to ladies, together with threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether or not occurring in public or in personal life.” Consequently, to solidify this determination, in 1999 the Common Meeting proclaimed 25 November because the Worldwide Day for the Elimination of Violence In opposition to Girls.
