Between 2006 and 2023, over 1,600 journalists have been killed all over the world, with near 9 out of 10 instances of those killings remaining judicially unresolved, in line with the UNESCO Observatory of Killed Journalists. Impunity results in extra killings and is usually a symptom of worsening battle and the breakdown of legislation and judicial techniques. UNESCO is anxious that impunity damages complete societies by masking up critical human rights abuses, corruption, and crime. Governments, civil society, the media, and everybody involved to uphold the rule of legislation are being requested to affix within the world efforts to finish impunity.
It’s in recognition of the far-reaching penalties of impunity, particularly of crimes towards journalists, that the United Nations Normal Meeting adopted Decision A/RES/68/163 at its 68th session in 2013 which proclaimed 2 November because the ‘Worldwide Day to Finish Impunity for Crimes towards Journalists’ (IDEI). The Decision urged Member States to implement particular measures countering the current tradition of impunity. The date was chosen in commemoration of the assassination of two French journalists in Mali on 2 November 2013.
Each two years, the attention elevating marketing campaign for the commemoration of the Worldwide Day to Finish Impunity for Crimes towards Journalists coincides with the findings of the UNESCO Director-General’s Report outlining the present state of world and regional impunity.
